Prevention
Goal
Reduce skin cancer incidence among California residents by: 1) improving public awareness regarding the dangers associated with over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation found in sunlight and tanning beds; 2) promoting public understanding that overall skin cancer rates are rising and all population groups are at risk for this disease; and 3) increasing individual and organization-wide practice of sun-protection behaviors and adoption of related sun-safety measures (e.g., policy enactment, increased shade cover, etc.)
Strategy 1:
Promote adoption of sun-protective lifestyles through media outreach, conference presentations, maintenance of a web-based resource center, provision of technical assistance to educational and business enterprises, and production and dissemination of sun-safety educational materials to entities that serve at-risk populations.
Strategy 2:
Develop collaborative relationships with entities which conduct outdoor activities or administer outdoor work sites. Seek to integrate sun-protection measures into their standard operation. Place a high priority on expanding partnerships with school districts to help them adopt skin cancer prevention best practices, including integration of sun-safety instruction, especially within science, health, and physical education classes.
Nutrition and Physcial Activity Subcommittee
Goal
To halt/reverse the upward obesity and overweight trends by increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and other healthy foods, reducing caloric intake, and increasing physical activity among California adults, teens, and children
Strategy
Implement mass communications to create environemental and policy change, improve leadership and coordination, and monitor outcomes through surveillance/evaluation.
Tobacco Subcommittee
Goal
Secure parity in workplace protection from secondhand smoke exposure among workers employed within Indian gaming-leisure worksites in California comparable to the protection provided workers employed at worksites under legal jurisdiction of the State of California.
Strategy
Create a PowerPoint presentation for local health departments to use to educate local community members, casino management, and casino workers, regarding the issue of secondhand smoke. Create a secondhand smoke toolkit for use by tobacco control and public health advocates to promote smoke-free Indian gaming.

Goal
